- Hands-on training program for people who want to work in a skilled trade and who enjoy learning by doing
- Specialized training and opportunities are available locally
- About 90 per cent of apprenticeship training/learning is provided in the workplace by employers
Step 1 – KNOW YOURSELF
- Learn about your skills, interests and abilities by completing self-assessments
- Discuss your strengths and interests with your parent/guardian, teachers, guidance counselor and/or mentors
Step 2 – EXPLORE OPPORTUNITIES
- Use career exploration resources to investigate the over than 140 skilled trades in Ontario
- Choose a skilled trade or sector related to your skills, interests and abilities
- Speak to a skilled trades person in your area of interest
- Job shadow a skilled trades person in the career area you are pursuing
Step 3 – BUILD PATHWAY
- Use your Annual Education Pathway Planner to map out course selections related to the skilled trade or sector you are interested in pursuing’discuss your pathway plan with your parent/guardian, teachers, guidance counselor and/or mentors to ensure you are making appropriate choices
Step 4 – GET EXPERIENCE
- Complete your 40 hours of community involvement
- Discuss work experience and cooperative education opportunities with your school’s Cooperative Education/ Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program (OYAP) teacher
- Visit your Career Resource Centre to look for employment to gain work experience
